Weight is the first number a structural engineer asks for and the last one most cladding brochures give. It decides whether a facade needs ledges and ties, whether a stone finish can go onto the upper floor of an occupied building, and how many cartons a crew carries up the scaffold. This guide gives the numbers for Murano manufactured stone: what it weighs per square metre, the international limit it is measured against, and what both mean for the wall.
What Murano manufactured stone weighs per square metre
Murano architectural stone veneers are typically 30–60% lighter than natural stone of the same face. On the wall, that starts at 22 kg per square metre for the lightest stone profile, Colorado, and rises through the range with thickness and texture. Every profile sits well under the international limit for adhered manufactured stone veneer, 15 lb/ft² (73 kg/m²) saturated, set out in ASTM C1670 and ICC-ES AC51.
These are boxed weights: the weight of a carton divided by the area it covers, measured before adhesive. They are approximate by nature, because texture varies from piece to piece; each is confirmed on the export packing list, and Murano's Full Collection Data Sheet governs on any conflict. The table lists the profiles verified in October 2026. Where a profile is not listed, its figure is being re-verified and will be added when it is confirmed, not estimated.

How to read a boxed weight
A boxed weight tells you what the stone itself adds to the wall. Installed, the adhesive bed is added on top: a typical Murano profile at 2.5 to 3 cm thickness comes to about 38 kg per square metre installed. The standard quotes its limit as a saturated weight, measured after the units have taken up water; Murano quotes boxed weights, and the margin between 22 kg/m² and 73 kg/m² is why the comparison holds whichever way it is read.
The international limit: 15 lb/ft², or 73 kg/m²
ASTM C1670 is the Standard Specification for Adhered Manufactured Stone Masonry Veneer Units, and ICC-ES AC51 is the acceptance criteria used alongside it for precast stone veneer. Both put the same ceiling on an adhered unit: 15 lb/ft², which is 73 kg/m², saturated. Under that line a stone finish is designed as a veneer that bonds to the wall. Above it, the finish becomes masonry that needs its own support: ledges, ties or a rail system, and an engineer's drawing to go with them.
Murano's reference wording for specifications reads: “Adhered manufactured stone veneer is limited internationally to an average saturated weight of 15 lb/ft² (73 kg/m²) under ASTM C1670 and ICC-ES AC51. Every Murano Stone profile sits well under this limit, allowing standard adhered installation without footings, ledges or structural steel on sound masonry or concrete walls.”
Consultants in Egypt use the limit because it is the clearest international line between a cladding the wall can simply carry and one that has to be engineered. It is a reference for classifying the cladding, not an approval of any particular wall: very tall or lightweight-framed walls still require an engineer's check. Murano's lightest stone profile sits at less than a third of the limit, and the heaviest profile in the table above is still well under it.
What the weight means on site
- No footings, ledges or structural steel. At these weights a veneer bonds to a sound, plastered masonry or concrete wall with adhesive. It does not need the concrete plinth, lintels and ties that full-bed natural stone needs. The substrate and the fixing method are still confirmed for each project, and very tall or lightweight-framed walls always get an engineer's check.
- Upper floors and renovation. Because the added load is small, Murano stone goes onto existing walls, upper-floor facades, balcony fronts and internal feature walls in occupied buildings without touching the structure. Much of Murano's work is refurbishment for exactly that reason.
- Handling and logistics. Cartons are carried by hand, pieces are cut with a standard masonry disc, and a two-person team lays a veneer wall far faster than a mason lays stone. Fewer tonnes per square metre also means fewer truck loads to a site outside Cairo.
Why 30–60% lighter changes the design, not just the delivery
Full-bed natural stone, thick cut slabs and heavy precast panels all put more mass on a facade than an adhered veneer, and every kilogram has to be carried down to the foundation. On a new building that means bigger plinths and more steel in the facade zone. On an existing building it often means the finish cannot be used at all. A veneer at 22 kg/m² and upwards removes that constraint: the architect chooses the stone for the elevation, and the engineer signs off the substrate rather than redesigning the frame. The approved claim is scoped on purpose: typically 30–60% lighter than natural stone of the same face, not lighter than every natural stone.

The same property is what makes manufactured stone practical on compound boundary walls, garden walls and pool surrounds, where there is no structure to speak of behind the finish. For how the material behaves in Egyptian heat and on the coast, the heat-resistance guide covers the other two questions every facade raises.
Specifying weight in a BOQ or tender
Five lines are enough to keep a stone cladding item unambiguous:
- The profile name and its boxed weight in kg per square metre, taken from Murano's Collection Data Sheet.
- The carton weight and the area one carton covers, so site logistics can be planned from the same source.
- The reference line: adhered manufactured stone veneer, under 15 lb/ft² (73 kg/m²) saturated per ASTM C1670 and ICC-ES AC51.
- The substrate the veneer is bonded to (plastered masonry or concrete) and the adhesive specified for it.
- The mock-up requirement: one section installed and approved before full installation.
Murano issues the weights table for every profile on request through the Projects & Companies form, and the Murano installation service installs what it supplies, so the figures in the tender and the figures on site come from the same sheet.
